Fernando was born in the morning on the 16th of March 1907 to Leocadio Torres and Augustina Muñoz in Tlahualilo de Zaragoza, Durango. [1] [2] He was the youngest of five children, though two of his brothers died before his birth. His mother died soon afterwards, and by 1910 his family had immigrated to Los Alamitos, California. Family rumor has it that his grandfather Priciliano Torres, who had either been serving as a judge or a university professor, had to flee the country. [2] [3] [4] His father then passed away at some point before 1920, leaving Vernon to reside with his uncle, Jesús Torres, in San Gabriel. [5]

He then married Lucy Salcido in 1930 and resided with her at 2018 Tea Garden Lane in Alhambra, Los Angeles. [6] Later they moved to 8436 Beverley Blvd. in Pico Rivera, CA. [7] Together they had 7 children - Virginia, Vernon Jr., Henry, Emily, Robert, David, and Lucy. Vernon and Lucy began raising Virginia and Vernon Jr. as bilingual, though due to issues in school ceased to speak Spanish at home. [2]

Come World War II, Vernon attempted to sign up for the U.S. army, but was rejected due to congenital heart problems. Instead he took up work at a munitions factory for the duration of the war. [2] He was emitted to Los Angeles County Hospital on the 4th of January due to colon ulcers and an E. Coli infection. His colon became perforated and he died of acute peritonitis (fluid in the abdomen). [8] He finally passed away on the 12th of January 1951 in Alhambra at the age of 43, and was buried in San Gabriel, CA. He was survived by his wife and seven children. [9] [10]
